What does Cut-Out mean and why is it used?

In the recording industry, a cut-out refers to a heavily discounted or surviving copy of an LP, 45 rpm single, cassette tape, compact disc, or other item.

When LPs were the primary medium for the commercial distribution of sound recordings, manufacturers would cut the corner, punch a hole, or add a notch to the spine of the sleeve of unsold records returned by retailers; these “cutouts” can then be resold at a reduced price to record dealers or other outlets. 45 rpm records for singles were usually with a hole drilled through the label, or stamped “CO”. A special section of a record store devoted to such items was known as the cut-out bin or bargain bin.

As tapes and CDs replaced LPs, the mechanisms for indicating a cut-out changed. With cassettes there was a tendency to punch or burn a hole through the housing and through the printed insert. On CDs (a practice that continues today), a section of varying size is removed from the spine of the case and the paper track listing. Other methods of cutting CDs include punching a hole through the barcode and cutting off a corner of the front booklet.

Cutouts are typically sold wholesale to retailers as non-returnable items, meaning the store cannot return them to the distributor for a refund. The mark also serves to prevent the retailer from attempting to sell the item at a discount for its original full price. Artists also typically do not receive full royalties for cutouts, as they are sold at a “promotional” cost, much less than the regular retail price.

Aside from physical damage to the liner notes and/or outer packaging, the actual disc (LP or CD) is generally unscathed by the cutting process and sounds exactly the same as the recording originally sold.

In addition to its use through a discounted item, the cutout method is also widely used by record labels to mark copies sent to third parties such as radio stations and DJs for promotional use. This prevents them from being returned through the retail channel for a refund.

A similar disabling procedure was employed with the laserdisc home video format and with the 8-track tape cartridge. The latter format usually involved burning a small dimple-like hole in the bottom label area of the cartridge, usually made with a heated soldering iron. The practice has also been extended to DVDs, Blu-ray discs and other physical home video formats.

HDCD

HDCD stands for High Definition Compatible Digital – a method of storing and displaying 20-bit information on a 16-bit system. For better quality, a CD player is needed that can extract this information, but the discs can be played on any CD player.

HDCD is common on the 'better' audio CD players, but few CDs use this technology.

The technology was designed and promoted by the quality label Reference Recordings.

In September 2000, Pacific Microsonics was acquired by Microsoft. This has meant, among other things, that Windows Media Player 9 (and higher) is able to decode the format - so play it.

Technical Details
HDCD encodes 20 bits of data into a 16 bit digital signal using special dithering, audio filters and specific amplitude and gain encodings. A control signal is hidden in the 'least significant bit' of the 16 bit Red Book audio. If an HDCD decoder in a CD (or DVD) player recognizes it, it will also be decoded as an HDCD; otherwise it will be played as a normal CD.

“HDCD Peak Extension” applies compression to the peaks of the signal heard on a non-HDCD system. But because the HDCD encoders used are of such good quality, CDs that are 'mastered' in HDCD will always sound better - even on non-HDCD players.

Hype stickers are the cover stickers that record companies use to highlight specific songs on an LP or CD or to draw attention to other attributes, such as Grammy Awards, multiple LPs and CDs, musicians featured on the recording, etc.

VindCD no longer purchases private collections. The reason for this is that regular partners are used for the purchase of second-hand or new CDs and LPs. Also very cautious given the enormous stock that still needs to be placed on the website.

A mini LP is a CD version of something that was originally released as a 12″ (12 inch) vinyl LP.

In many cases the packaging is superior to, or at least more elaborate than, most vinyl releases. The reason for this is that many vinyl LP's subsequent vinyl releases were inferior to the first vinyl release (or at least lacked some of the extras from the first release - such as postcards, posters, lyrics, etc.). They are often called “cardboard sleeves” and “cardboard sleeves”.

. paper sleeves” that are made exclusively of paper or cardboard (except for the CD, of course). Other names and abbreviations include: “jpn lp sleeve cd” and “kami-jacket”. (The last of these is, I think, an indication that they are highly valued by many who collect them.)

They are also known as “LP replicas” as they tend to exactly replicate the original packaging of the first vinyl release.

SHM-CD
